Hi lovely friends,
With so many beautiful clothes out there, it’s hard not to spend. I’ve never been particularly good with money - back when I was a student, I lived in my overdraft and felt flush when my balance hit £0. But I’ve improved. I even have a small amount of savings now. Still, that little thrill of making a purchase is hard to resist.
This week was one of those weeks. I had a few hours to kill around Westbourne Grove; dangerous territory when you're trying not to spend, and the shops there are just too good. I popped into Reformation, tried on a pair of gorgeous silver shoes, and somehow managed to walk out empty-handed. “I can do this,” I told myself. Small win.
Reformation silver shoes, £248
But then I walked into Me+Em a few doors down. Funnily enough, I was wearing a Me+Em dress at the time, which sparked a lovely chat with the sales assistants. One thing led to another (as it does), and I found myself trying on a few pieces - more on that in my Stories tomorrow. It was one of those magical days where everything looks good, even though you're not looking for anything. Of course, that’s when you find the best stuff. I ended up walking out with two pieces I absolutely love.

Then, just around the corner, I saw this gorgeous girl standing on the pavement wearing a buttery yellow bomber jacket. I always try to compliment people when I love what they’re wearing - it’s such a simple way to brighten someone’s day. I told her I loved her jacket, and she pointed to the pop-up store behind her, saying, “It’s from in there!”
Isolda jacket, £674
Naturally, I wandered in. The space was full of stunning designs from Brazilian brands, and the jacket she was wearing was by a label called Isolda. The designer herself was there and told me how the collection was inspired by a trip she’d taken to the rainforest. She showed me her scrapbook filled with sketches, notes, and photos from her travels. The dresses had prints drawn from the shapes of forest leaves; the colours were rich greens, deep berry tones, sun-warmed yellows and browns. Even the buttons on the jacket were handmade from different types of wood found in the forest.
The pop-up is there for a few weeks, but this particular designer was only in town for three days. So I had a choice: walk away and regret it forever - or give in and buy the jacket. You can guess what I did.
Moral of the story? If you’re trying not to spend, avoid having a few spare hours near beautiful shops. Because if you’re anything like me, your bank account might take a hit and you’ll come home with a few more bags than you left with.
So there’s two pieces I’ve bought this week, and here’s ten more that I have my eye on but I’ve locked my bank card in a cupboard to stop me buying!
